B.Tech. Industrial Engineering  Syllabus

B. Tech Industrial Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate course divided into 8 semesters. A student will study theoretical subjects in 7 semesters and the last semester involves industrial training. To be eligible to apply for B. Tech Industrial Engineering, a candidate must have passed 10+2 exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. 

After completion of this course students can do MS, M. Tech courses from India & abroad as well. Industrial engineers can get jobs in diversified fields. Students of industrial engineering background can do jobs in manufacturing, Transportation, government sector, Banking sector, IT sector, food processing industries.  

Some Of the companies which hire Industrial Engineers are TATA, Infosys, Wipro, BSNL, DRDO, ISRO. Industrial Engineers can get a job as Project manager, Operation manager, Quality manager in private & government companies. The salary of entry-level industrial engineer ranges from INR 3.6 to 10 Lacs per annum.

B.Tech. Industrial Engineering: What is it About?

Objective of industrial engineering is to provide understanding of design, research & development section, manufacturing, operations and services. Industrial engineers work is to get the assigned job done in most efficient way i.e. to balance many factors like time, manpower required, available technology, action workers required to complete the job. Industrial engineers are to reduce the waste & improve performance. They have to achieve the end product with no errors & study the product requirement more carefully to give best result.

Industrial engineering covers the topics of production and inventory control system, safety, economics of manufacturing, quality control and maintenance, supply chain management, operation research, operation management, logistics, process engineering.

B. Tech Industrial Engineering: Eligibility

A candidate must have passed 10+2 exam with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM) as main subjects for taking admission in the B. Tech, Industrial Engineering course. Students have to score minimum 50% marks (PCM) in 10+2 class to take admission in most of the institutes. Students who have done diploma in Industrial Engineering after 10th, may get admission directly in the second year of B. Tech course.

B. Tech Industrial Engineering: Admission Process

For taking admission in the B. Tech, Industrial Engineering students have to pass the entrance exams conducted by the various universities. Students after clearing the entrance exams go through the process of counseling conducted by the universities, where according to the score in the entrance students will get the admission in the respective fields. Some of the universities gives direct admissions to the students on the merit basis.

Entrance Exams

In the entrance exam of B. Tech, questions will be asked from the subjects of physics, chemistry & math's. There will be three sections in the exam & each section will consists of 30 questions. Total 90 no. of questions will be there in the exam. Each question is of 4 marks for each correct answer. Duration of the test will be of three hours. For the admissions in the B. Tech various national level & state level tests are conducted in the country. Some of the private Institutes like SRM University, BITS Pilani, VIT University etc. conduct their tests for taking admission in their institutes. Application forms of most of the entrance exams will be available in the month of December & will be submitted in the month of January.

Selection Process For B.Tech Industrial Engineering

Selection will be made on the basis of class XII, class XI & class X marks, ranking in the JEE or Equivalent, performance in academic and extracurricular activities, essay and performance in personal interview. Applicants with minimum percentage of 70% aggregate marks in physics, Chemistry and mathematics in class XII and a JEE score will be eligible for admission to the B. Tech programme.

Direct Admission

Some of the engineering institutes offer direct admission on the basis of the merit in the 10+2 exams or equivalent exams. Some private colleges also offer direct admission in the B. Tech on the management seats. Fees structure of management quota seats are higher than the normal admissions. Thapar Inst of Engineering & Technology, Patiala, BITS Pilani, Pilani, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, SSN College of Engineering, Chennai are some of the colleges are some of the colleges which give direct admission in bachelor of technology, industrial engineering course.

Lateral Entry

Various colleges in India offer direct admission in second year to the students who applied in the B. Tech after completion of their diploma course. Some colleges take entrance exam for the diploma holder students for  their admission directly in the second year of the B. Tech course. Such lateral entry for the diploma holders students will be in the third semester. Students with minimum 60% marks (eligibility criteria will be different for different institutes) in the diploma are eligible to take admissions in the B. Tech course.
