Master of Philosophy in Bioinformatics is a two year advanced postgraduate research degree, designed for aspirants interested in studying about the science of collecting, organizing and analyzing complex biological data like genetic codes. The course involves the integration of computational techniques in order to analyze the information related to bio-molecules and answer various biological questions.

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field of science, which focuses on the application of computer technology in order to collect, organize and analyze the information that is stored in certain types of biological data and convert ‘big data’ into ‘smart data’. It provides globally accessible databases that enable scientists to submit, search and analyze information and also conduct various medical research activities.
Candidates interested in learning more about the field, can also pursue higher degree courses like Ph. D. (Doctorate of Medicine) and other research related studies.
The program is designed to offer eligible candidates a specialization in the wide range of applications and techniques used in the field of Bioinformatics and to analyze software for data studies and comparisons and also provides tools for modeling, visualizing, exploring and interpreting data. During the course, candidates learn to convert multitude of complex data into useful information and knowledge.

A minimum aggregate score of 55% for general and 50% in the case of SC/ST candidates is required at the level of graduation and post graduation (Master’s degree), which should be completed from a recognized university or a deemed university.
Candidates should have a Master’s degree in any relevant discipline of science field, and a graduation degree in B. Tech/M. Sc. or an equivalent qualification.
Students waiting for their final year’s examinations result can also apply for the course on a provisional basis.
Although it is advisable to candidates to have a minimum two years work experience, before applying for the course, as many reputed institutes admits students with professional experience only.
Most of the colleges and institutes offering the course provide admission to candidates, based on of their combined performance in the last qualifying examination and a relevant entrance test. Students securing the qualifying percentile set for the entrance exams are eligible for the counseling process.
As a part of counseling, candidates may have to appear for two additional rounds of group discussion and personal interview, wherein their general aptitude and knowledge for the course is examined by highly qualified and experienced faculties. A merit list is then issued by each university announcing the names of the selected deserving candidates.
Students waiting for their final year’s exam results can also apply, on a provisional basis. Permanent admission to such candidates will be given only after they fulfill all the above mentioned eligibility criteria.
